Holy Basil for Immune Support

Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum) is a perennial herb, which means that it can grow at least two years, and is native to South and Southeast Asia. Favoring warm, tropical climates, Holy Basil blooms during the summer months. However, if you plant Holy Basil seeds in containers, they will be able to grow year-round as long as they are moved inside during the winter months. The aerial parts (the leaves, stems, and seeds) are used in herbal remedies. This herb produces beautiful, tiny purple flowers, which are edible and can be used in many ways. They are a delicious addition to salads and delightful to brew for a tea.

History of Holy Basil

Holy Basil, also referred to as Tulsi, has been revered for thousands of years in Ayurveda and traditional Western herbalism. Records of Holy Basil can be found in the “Charaka Samhita,” an Ayurvedic text believed to have been written around 400-200 BCE and considered to be the most important text in Ayurveda. In this text, Holy Basil is described as “the incomparable one” and is believed to be a reincarnation of the goddess Tulasi, a consort of the Hindu deity Lord Vishnu. This sacred plant is considered to represent fidelity and has been used for spiritual growth. Holy Basil is categorized as a Rasayana, which means that it supports a foundation of wellness within the body. In Ayurveda, this foundation begins in the chakras, or energy centers, of the body. Holy Basil is believed to be capable of balancing the chakras, as well as promoting goodness and virtue.

In Western herbalism, Holy Basil is considered to be an adaptogen. Adaptogens are herbs that help create homeostasis, or balance, within the body. These herbs can benefit the body in many ways, including stress support, nourishing the adrenal glands, balancing the mood, and even supporting immune health.
